March is National Nutrition Month and it’s the kickoff to eating healthy. MyPlate, which consist of fruits, vegetables, grains and protein followed by a glass symbolizing dairy. Some of the suggestions from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics are:
- Make half your plate fruits and vegetables.
- Switch to fat-free or low-fat milk.
- Make at least half your grains whole.
- Vary your protein choices. Try eating seafood twice a week and include beans more often.
I must confess that we are a family where fruits and vegetables are not part of our daily diets. I tend to buy crappy snacks like cookies, wafers, ice cream and the list can go on. Me and gringo have a sweet tooth and its never too late to make healthy changes. This month we will be making changes! Fruits and vegetables will be our new snacks. We will cook healthy food and make wise choices as to what we put on our plates.
